Senate Update 11-07-11

MIDDLE COLLEGE
·        On Monday, October 31, the All Academic Area meeting gave faculty and professional staff the opportunity to have an open discussion with members of college administration regarding the Middle College.  This meeting was requested by the Senate due to a lack of college-wide discussion and involvement in the development of the program.  President Sbrega has since stated that while there may have been some effort to include some faculty/professional staff, that it was not enough.

·        After the Oct 31 discussion, it is apparent that in the months leading up to the development, approval, and implementation of the Middle College, there was no opportunity provided by college administration for discussion and input in a Professional Staff Meeting, All-Academic Area meeting, or in any college governance committee meeting in which there was divisional representation and follow-up in a division meeting.  In this regard, it is clear that the establishment of the Middle College failed all primary measures of shared governance.

·        In the coming months, the Senate will continue to work in a positive, forward-looking manner, focusing on ways to formally assure transparency in academic decision making.
